Happy Sunday!
Hope you're enjoying the holiday weekend! It's BEAUTIFUL here and the weekend has been full of outdoor r & r :)
I'm going through my materials...thinking about and preparing for my new firsties. It's definitely not too early - staff reports back July 22nd!
I will be working with at least one paraprofessional (we call them "One-on-One" in our district) and a student teacher this fall. I've been digging through activities to see what I can hand off to them so they can be an active member of the team. My goal is to have several content appropriate activities available and then giving the other adults in the classroom autonomy on which one they choose.
One set of materials that we will ALL be using are the short vowel story cards (freebie!).
Here's a "throwback" post when I first created them:

Meet the Short Vowels Freebie!
Happy Weekend!
I'm so happy to revive my TPT Treasures:
T.P.T. Treasures is a series featuring awesome finds I've used with my students and absolutely LOVE! My students can be considered a "tough" group to teach (although I think they are "perfect" and wouldn't have it any other way!). If an activity clicks with them, then it's a sure winner!
This week, I'd like to shout out an awesome FREE find! Actually, another teacher used these last year and told me all about them:
The above link takes you to Lesley's store Practice Makes Perfect, here's a link to her blog.
Her stories are a RIOT, especially with 6 year olds :) There's one vowel per page...perfect to slip into a sheet protector. I have to admit, I wasn't sure if I could pull off the Short O story and had my student teacher present it instead (he's a total rockstar, BTW). I wish you could have been there...my students were giggling SO much and almost immediately repeating the catch phrases at the end of each story! ♥
I think these stories are perfect as is, but I have issues (I admit it) and really prefer all my materials to match :) I also wanted a smaller half-page size. I did adapt Lesley's amazing stories to simplify some of the wording and add a little zebra-influence:
Back to July 2014: these cards were one of the HIGHLIGHTS of my phonics lessons this past year. Just imagine an entire class of 6 year-olds saying these chants as they tackled their reading :)
I forgot that I had passed off the Short O story to last year's student teacher, lol. I can't wait to use them again!
I also uploaded a revised packet that I used all last year with my firsties. It's definitely "student-approved" and now available at
There's 224 half-page colorful cards...because I tend to overdo things. These cards also match in size and format with my WBT freebie cards (Math almost done!) and NWEA Quick Question cards because I have Type A issues :)
Here's a closer look at how I use these counting cards:
