Blending & Birthday Sale!

Happy Weekend!

Today is a special day & in honor of July 20th, I'm throwing a 20% off everything sale just for today!

I also want to share a new item I've worked on for
overOne. YEAR!!!

At my school, my fab-u-lous co-teacher plans the phonics lessons. They are truly the best I've seen! The first graders THRIVED because she kept a routine of weekly activities while still allowing for differentiation (up and down). I wish everyone could come and observe the magic!

I teach Special Education inclusion and the predictable lesson format really helped my students get everything they needed. The typical routine included:

Everyday - flipchart with phonics focus (we use the Open Court sound/spelling cards). The flipchart included blending, guided practice, some type of interactive game, a fun video clip (i.e.: Electric Company on youtube), and an exit ticket.

The above activities were at the carpet, then we used the following schedule to "show what we know" at our tables:

Monday - Word Families
Tuesday - Dictation
Wednesday - Decodable Book
Thursday - activity (i.e.: a cut & paste/sort)
Friday - Weekly Exit Ticket

In future posts, I plan on going through each activity to show how I differentiated it for my students' needs. But for now, I wanted to share my new blending resource!

Our students see a similar blending page on the interactive flipchart. There are more words and they are in black and white. Everyday, I hand-wrote up another blending page in order to provide additional practice. I used different colored markers and after reading every line together, I would ask students to pick a colored line to read individually. They loved it because 1) they picked their fave color and 2) I let them use a fun pointer. Whatever works!

This daily activity was very informative to help me assess how my students were grasping (or not) the phonics skills. After we settled into a routine, it only took about 5 minutes! The key is to do it every single day.

By the end of the school year, I had over 150 pages of these handwritten blending charts! I wish I had snapped a photo because they were a hot mess. I spent all summer typing them up and adding a few more (like holiday vocabulary, language art connections, etc.) and I'm so, so happy to say I'm finally DONE!

The entire set includes 200 pages and they are available in color or BW (so the file is actually 400 blending pages). I printed the colored pages and inserted them into sheet protectors. I like to keep the BW copies so we can write on them (like crossing out the silent e and/or underlining vowel teams):

I've been living with this project for so long, so the price is one million dollars $6.00. And it's also 20% off today! Be sure to download the preview to see the entire Table of Contents.

Have a super day!

  1. What a wonderful idea! The color idea makes it take on a really special thing for the kids to want to do. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Thank you for your kind comments! It's funny how color does make such a difference. I also updated the Birthday Bash file to open in google docs. I apologize for the inconvenience with Scribd! Thanks again :)
