As a special educator, I LOVE centers! I can use them in so many different ways - modeling with a small group, using the materials to support instruction, and my all-time fave...having students work in pairs at a center & then using observation to assess or using this time to pull for individual assessment.
I don't have my own classroom, so many of my small groups occur on my office floor or off to the side in the general education classroom. This is what it looks like:

I find this to be a much more authentic assessment than one-on-one time with me. Many of my students benefit from extra opportunities to learn from other students instead of only from teacher-directed activities. One of the biggest challenges I face is having my students transfer their skills & setting up centers like this helps me see where support is still needed & growth is occurring :)
