Calling All Visual Learners

Wow, it IS great to be so popular!

Just kidding, if you currently seeing a hot mess of photobucket "look who's popular" images, I apologize. I'm hoping it will magically resolve itself before Saturday, or else I'm putting it on my to-do list for the weekend.

I wanted to share something I've had a lot of success with this school year. I hope you can use it with your learners, too!

Every week we tackle 5-6 new high frequency (sight) words. Each grade learns 200 words from Dr. Fry's list throughout the year. That means my first graders are working on words 201-400.

I will often use breakfast and/or snack time to review the words with these cards:

I color-code sounds and spellings we know OR if the color adds a connection (i.e.: red). I may also add a graphic to add meaning. I admit that right now I've been using handwritten cards on index cards, however I CANNOT even draw stick figures and I really don't want to confuse the children :)
Making visual cards for all Fry words 1-400 is next on my project list!

A quick explanation of the visual cues I chose:
easy - both long E sounds are in purple & "e" is in each corner
friends -fr blend in green, "end" underlined, plural s in yellow, graphic
red - colored font & red crayon
didn't - "did" underlined, apostrophe in pink, contraction "crash" in background
heard - a big ear ( I didn't want to focus on the word ear & risk mispronunciation)
order - or and er color-coded, graphics to support meaning

Happy Friday (it's almost here!)!!
