Behavior, Freebie, & Instagram!

Happy Tuesday - Last Day of April!

Where did the month go??

It's a busy time with field trips (2 more to go!), NWEA testing, IEP meetings, & more! Our students' last day of school is June 12th and teachers stay for one more day. Our ascension ceremony is around June 5th, so we may not have full attendance the last week of school. Usually the last few days is split between learning (although grades have already been entered!) and packing up the rooms. Six more weeks!

Spring fever is alive and well around our school! This week, I've reintroduced an oldie, but goodie behavior points "game." I've used it before with various groups and this time I'm using it with my Power Hour reading intervention group. It's a simple tally chart for the students vs. the teacher. The students can earn points for exceeding expectations (i.e.: helping out a teammate). I can earn points if I have to give extra reminders to my almost-second graders. The main objective is for me to NOT get any points :)

I keep track using a dry erase marker/board
& then I record the totals on this chart:

Yikes! It's a little too close of a game!
I was hoping for ZERO points in my column :)

Although we only have six weeks left, the learning never stops. This week we've been tackling the tough concept of
Open & Closed Syllables.

My students need extra, extra practice...so I made text cards (15 open, 15 closed) that I laminated so we could divide the syllable and then sort. Here's an action shot:

Sorry for the glare! As a guided practice, we wrote details on the laminated cards with dry erase markers.

Here's a closer look at the colorful sorting mats:

And here's the REAL sorting mats I'm using with my students
(who have quite the zany sense of humor!):

Pick up this freebie (both sorting mats included) right here!

Last, but not least, I'm finally on Instagram! I can't say I fully understand it yet, but I'm sure I'll figure it out soon. If you would like to follow me, my name is positivelylearning (and thank you!).

UPDATE: I just uploaded a fun sight word game my students have been enjoying this week:

Warning: I may have heard the exclamation "Ole!" more than a couple hundred times & counting ;)

Have a super week!
