Weird White House Pets - GR Freebie!

This week, my Guided Reading Level F Group is reading
I'm really excited about this for two reasons...
1) my students are going to LOVE this story, and
2) I'm finally revealing a "tiny" portion of the big GR project I've been working on and hinting at all school year!

This year, my GR reading groups have been focused on mostly Levels D-G. I've started putting together mini-kits featuring materials from Reading A-Z and/or original materials that coordinate with the reading, comprehension, and
word work for each story.

Check out what we're using for Weird White House Pets:

This simple kit includes vocabulary cards from the story (introduced the first day, used for alphabetical order on subsequent days), comprehension questions (using "I Mustache You a Question" theme - stay tuned!), and any extra sorts/visuals that support learning. This pack includes sorting animal pictures (traditional vs non-traditional pets), and matching animal vocabulary cards. It was SO easy to create and assemble this kit, yet will go a long way in engaging my students in the story. As my GR groups rotate, selected student pairs may earn the opportunity to use the cards together during their literacy center time
(they ♥ "being the teacher!").

What do you think? Does anyone already do this? I'd love to hear if and/or how you enhance the Reading A-Z lessons. I use this series because it allows me to provide more books for my students to take home (all students receive 1-2 books per week) at a minimal cost. I also really like the Leveled Literacy kits from Fountas and Pinnell, but usually use those lessons for my students with IEP goals and objectives in Literacy.

Enjoy your Sunday!

  1. I just taped myself teaching a Guided Reading lesson using this book! The kids I taught loved the pets that were TOO weird and had to go to a zoo.
