I just posted this last night and really didn't plan on linking up, but...we have a 2-hour delay here! I was already back from the gym, showered, and ready to leave when they called the delay.
Soooo...it's a perfect time for:
Here's my Five for Friday for the first full week back from break!
5. SLEEP!
I just attended the Whole Athlete Seminar in Philly last Saturday. It. Was. AMAZING! One huge takeaway was that in order to reach optimal health (my personal goal), my priorities should be (in this order): nutrition (check), sleep (ugh), and fitness (check). There's more of course, but these are the first three. I've had a good handle on nutrition and fitness for awhile with only a few slips here and there (like my entire Christmas break). But sleep? I subscribe to the "I'll sleep when I'm dead" motto that most of my family also lives by. This week I've focused on sleeping a full 8 hours with semi-success. One thing I've noticed is that while my dark circles are already diminishing, I don't really feel any more rested. I also have been waking up with mild headaches. No big deal because they go away quickly. I think my body is still adjusting to the shock of getting enough sleep! I'm also a bit worried about fitting everything in...early morning hours is where I'm the most productive. Any thoughts? I'd love to hear any advice or personal connections on this topic, thanks!
4. Printables!
Printable packets seem to be all the rage at TPT lately. I've snagged a few and still looking for some more. My Printables Linky now has EIGHTY awesome products (paid and free). I've found out about so many terrific products and new(ish) TPT stores through this linky party. I'm still promoting all month, so please add your link to share your favorites!
3. Common Core Math
Oh, C.C.... such a love-hate relationship we have! I love that my students are thinking about math so deeply and explaining their thinking. BUT I'm seriously coming home every night and trying to rework "what just happened?" in order to reteach the next day. I have enough materials created for the entire Engage NY first grade module(s) to fill my basement! I'm still trying out and tossing/revising where necessary based on my students' results. I'll really need to wait until summer to reevaluate and prepare for the next year. Here's a glimpse of my latest for reteaching

I'm printing everything with blacklines these days because I'm usually printing out 2-3 sets. I put this simple math mat and cards in a ziploc for my partner pairs to use for practice (day 1) and during Guided Math (day 2). They loved it!
2. My Hair
I've been getting keratin treatments because my thin, fine hair breaks so easily :( It looks "fuzzy" unless I have a professional blow-out. My issue is that I don't have time - it takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r! So I've skipped the last couple and now my hair looks like this:
I asked my student why I looked so sad and she said I'm not, my mouth is actually open wide because I'm singing :)
1. Sara Bareilles is the coolest ever!
I've long been obsessed with the song "Brave," and now I ♥ it even more! Sara dropped by a KIPP school in Chicago and made this! That link is to her website, this link will take you straight to the Brave sing-a-long video. ♥
And, yes, I was up at 3:45 am. My alarm goes off at 3:40, I check FB while waiting for my shower to warm-up, snap photos of things I want to read later, shower, brush my teeth, and try to get to the gym by 4:15! This is where the darn sleep priority keeps getting in my way!
Please don't forget to visit Kacey and all the teachers who linked up this week!
Have a fantastic weekend!
I have only taught in Texas (except Korea this year) and only know about the TEKS. I keep hearing about the Common Core and wonder just how different it is.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am way super impressed that you get up at 3:45 am. I am still sound asleep at that time. I have been working on my health goals too and have just recently hit my 50 pound weight loss mark. I always have the goal to wake up in the morning and work out, but it seems that it never happens. Any tips?

Congratulations on your weight loss success!
DeleteMy suggestion for getting up early...coffee! Haha, seriously that's how it started. I would treat myself to a wonderful cup of coffee after my workout. After a few weeks of keeping the early schedule, you'll get used to it and actually look forward to it!
Good luck!
Hi there! I just found your blog today. My husband takes an herbal sleeping aid called melatonin. He's had trouble sleeping for 20 years of our marriage, and the melatonin seems to really calm him down. Also, I have very thin hair too. What is keratin? Is it a product, or a pill?

Thank you for your message! I've heard about melatonin helping. I actually fall asleep well, my problem is that I wake up early because I get so excited about a project or whatever I'm getting ready to do! I
Delete'm not sure what keratin actually is, but it's a salon treatment I get. It's something applied on my hair and it keeps it smooth for about 4-5 months. It's also an ingredient in some hair products and supposed to help smooth out all those little flyaways. My hair needs any help it can get!
Thank you again for your comment! I'm headed over now to check out your blog!

That is an early morning! I thought I woke up early at 5:30! Hoping you feel better about sleeping soon!
