I think I should make this an ongoing series...
cleaning off my camera roll and offering freebies!
I don't know how I functioned before using my iphone to capture learning moments! My students ask me to snap a pic when they feel extra proud of their work - they ♥ it!
If you've been following me on instagram, you already know we are knee-deep in place value Common Core-style. I am LOVING it! I still wish we taught it earlier in the school year...but this has been the "easiest" place value unit I've ever experienced
(maybe because we waited?).
Here's what we did yesterday:
I'm sorry it's sideways!
We've been representing numbers with snap cubes (SO much easier than those tiny base ten blocks!) for a couple days now using these freebie cards.
Yesterday we moved onto expanded form using number bonds and number sentences.
You would have thought we were having a welcome back party - my students were SO happy to see number bonds again! I couldn't believe it, after all the struggles in fall and now they ♥ them?
Not that I'm not complaining ;)
We did a check for understanding using From the Pond's Show Me the Number! and Stephany Dillon's Place Value Printables:
Darn it, my new iphone is already taking blurry pictures?!
We also did some quick matching using my
Our math block is 90 minutes (!!!) from 1:30-3:00 with a class bathroom break (10 minutes) at 2:45. I work with one small group the entire time and use this agenda to break it down:
Fact Fluency (using this freebie to track our growth!)
Application (story problem - used to either check for understanding of previous lesson OR activate prior knowledge)
Guided Practice (the main lesson - we follow Engage NY)
"Independent Practice" - I use a mock-Guided Math model for students to work independently while I'm checking individually for understanding.
"Assign Yourself" - my small group has their own "math bags" they can use to work independently if they finish early. There's a variety of station-style activities, including:
Number Bonds!
Every bag has a plastic baggie with a set of themed number bonds and mini-erasers to use for counters. I've had so much fun coordinating holiday and themes for independent math stations. Someday soon I'll be posting a mega-pack of math goodies...I always make sure they are student-tested and approved first!
Tomorrow, we'll be ready to play a few rounds of this:
Place Value Blast (freebie!)
If you are looking for more cards and activities to use with your mathematicians, please check out the freebies at my store!
There's also a HUGE sale at TPT to celebrate 3 MILLION teachers!
Blog Hoppin' is collecting a list of stores participating in sale - up to 28% off! I'm definitely in...my entire store will be 20% off, plus use the Promo Code TPT3 to receive additional discounts! Don't be that person who forgets the promo code, you'll feel very sad
(I know this from experience)!
Thanks for reading - Have a wonderful Wednesday!
Camera Roll freebies is a great idea! I may have to join you on that one. My iPhone sometimes takes blurry pictures too - I think I might take mine in and see what they say.
