Place Value Freebies!

Happy Throwback Thursday!

We started place value this week!! I adore teaching place value because 1) my students ♥ it and 2) it's where I see SO many lightbulb moments for my firsties.

My questions for everyone is WHEN do you teach place value? Before Common Core, I've taught it in fall which was super helpful for learning the teen numbers, however the delay before addition/subtraction felt long. I've also taught it in spring, when it was easy-breezy for my students to grasp, but I think the gained knowledge could have really helped earlier. Do you have a preference? Please leave a comment - thanks!

I will be getting to the "throwback" part, because I'd like to share an old place value freebie,
BUT I also wanted to offer something new!

 (let's pretend it's Wednesday)

I'm linking up this post with Curious Firsties "Wow!" linky because we're trying something different this year and I. ♥. IT!
Take a look:

We are using rods of snap cubes instead of base ten blocks! I realize that may not sound revolutionary, but it really feels that way to me! I've painfully observed my students who receive OT services struggle with those teeny tiny "ones" cubes year after year! And then the "ping ping" as they hit the floor...
my inventory shrinks every school year :(

The snap cubes are easy to handle, colorful, and my students think they are the bomb. That's really all I need! We started with decade numbers and then built numbers with cubes representing both the tens and ones.

BTW, do you like the sticky notes? That's where most  of my TPT creations are born. I try it out, create it, and then try it out a few more times before it goes into my TPT store.

we used with the blocks!

As always, my students can earn 2-3 minutes of free time when we use awesome manipulatives like the snap cubes. They were just such rockstars during the entire lesson, they earned 3 whole minutes! I swear I reached down to set the timer on my phone and when I looked up, I saw this:

Now that's talent!

The freebie cards also coordinate (same size & style) as the flashcards in my Place Value Activity Pack:

And here's the throwback post with a link to pick up
these freebie HTO cards:

The above picture is from last school year.
There are 30 HTO in the set!

Enjoy & please leave a comment
if you have any fabulous ideas for place value!

Please visit Curious Firsties to read more "Wow" ideas.
I'm going to try out the nonsense word activity (genius!)!

  1. Thank you for the place value cards. I'm going to give the snap cubes a try. My children are struggling with place value this year. Our curriculum has us teaching throughout the entire year. Maria

  2. Thanks so much for linking up! This was a great post. We are just about to hit place value, as well. We have been hitting on it all year long with a hundreds chart. We use lines for the tens and dots for the ones on the hundreds chart. So I can't wait to see if all this frontloading will help when we explicitly teach it. We...will...see :)

  3. Thanks for the freebies! We work on place value all year during our math meeting. I start the year with addition and subtraction strategies, but I am into more explicit place value teaching in late October or early November. It is such an important concept that everything else builds on that I can't even imagine waiting until spring to teach it!
