SENSE-sational: Scarecrow

This week, we will be reading the book
Scarecrow by Cynthia Rylant

I know many teachers used this book during October, but last month was already so jam-packed with jack-o-lanterns, monsters, and candy...so I decided to save the autumn theme for this week.

This book is GORGEOUS and easily lends itself to a week-long of close reading. Readers can dive into the rich vocabulary and text-dependent questions, plus multiple opportunities for visualization.

We will be exploring the book all week
with our rotating sensory box:

The first day, my students listen to the read-aloud and then explore the materials and vocabulary.

The sensory box is filled with hay, Indian corn,
and various types of birdseed :)

I also tossed in a few autumn table-scatter leaves for a touch of color. Next time I plan on adding colorful buttons and possibly a few pieces of flannel cloth for added texture.

Did you know there was a Brainpop video featuring Cynthia Rylant? I love adding a technology aspect (also serves as behavior reinforcement/motivation), whether using Brainpop or an youtube read-aloud of our story.
