Happy Monday!
I hope you had a successful start to the week!
Our students are in school all the way through December 23rd (half day)! It's going to be packed full with instruction and lots of festivities.
Soooo...how's behavior going? We are a gritty bunch, which can be a plus and minus ;) The first grade team has brainstormed a few extra incentives to supports our littles during the holiday season, and beyond!
Hallway Rock Stars!
Our school is a former (1960's?) high school and now houses two schools: K-4 Elementary (750 students) on the lower three floors and 5-8 (600 students) on the two higher floors. It's a BUSY place with a few common spaces shared by everyone.
One common issue is our hallway. It's like an airport runway ;)
If you "take off" at one end (music room), you will really pick up speed passing the six first grade classrooms, and often come to a crash landing at the restrooms. And while that's probably a lot of fun, it's just not that safe.
We found a solution...

At our morning meeting, we announced the Hallway Rock Star Challenge! We set up a tally chart on a bulletin board in the hallway and told the students they can earn points for the classroom! Whenever we saw a "model citizen" walk (not run, dance, slide) at a Noise Level Zero (silently), we made a BIG deal and put a tally mark next to their class. If we saw someone sprinting, being noisy, etc., we'd say "oh darn, I'm sure you'll be looking amazing next time!"
I wouldn't go as far to say we've had a complete turnaround, BUT it has really helped with redirection. It's turned a "stop running!" into "let me see your rock star walking!"

I hope this helps anyone who may be in a similar situation!
I'll be back soon to share about our Polar Express punch-card incentive!
