Wordless Wed & Hump Day Highlight!

Thank you Miss DeCarbo for hosting Wordless Wednesday!

I'm also linking up with Mrs. Stanford's Class (♥ her!)
for her first Wednesday linky:

Seriously, cute!

Yesterday was our the first day back for our students and it was a doozy! We had inclement weather and all the surrounding schools had two-hour delays that turned into closings. But our district was open on time! Unfortunately, the weather didn't realize this and many teachers and students couldn't even get there :(

It was tricky to know what to teach and what to postpone because we'll have to reteach it again to (hopefully) full classes today. What does your grade level team decide when this happens? We have the choice to teach as planned & then reteach as necessary, postpone lessons until the next day (everything shifts back one day), or condense lesson plans to stay on schedule.

It was probably good to have our students ease in because they were tired from their winter break:

Oh buddy, I totally understand!

Today we will be going full-force with learning. We are getting ready to start long vowel spellings (!!), place value (♥), and continuing our Power Hour (Guided Reading) Challenge. We also broke out new anthologies to use for Comprehension - it's so exciting to have a text in every students' hands!

Here's this week's sensory box to celebrate the new year:

Glitter just doesn't photograph well!

During our intervention block, we are warming up with our vocabulary, close reading a nonfiction text, and writing about our goals for the new year. I can't wait to share what they write!

The cards and writing prompts are from my

Lastly, I had a sweet buyer ask for a long vowels version of my Sculpt It! Activity Pack:

I've always seen the need for it, but wasn't sure what I wanted to see my students doing...I'd like to have them work on building vowel teams, i.e.: sculpting the "ai" when provided with r _ _ n and the coordinating graphic. How would you like to see the long vowel words represented? Please leave a comment with any suggestions. Thank you!

Have a super week & stay warm!

  1. Wow - our 40 ish degree weather doesn't look so bad now! We've been back at it since Monday and we are still easing into it with lots of review. I just keep playing different games with the concepts so it doesn't seem like I am re-teaching to the kids. :)

  2. Lots of people had snow days this week! We don't usually have snow days here in Hawaii, lol. It's 65 degrees here and we are freezing! We start back on Friday but my kids don't come back until Jan 13th.

  3. I know how you feel! In my district students were off on Monday and came back yesterday when 7 inches of snow fell. Today the wind chill is minus 30! Super cold!! Of course we had to cancel school and tomorrow looks just as bad. I think the whole week is a wash!

Your New Year Literacy activities look fun!

  5. I have a 2 hour delay tomorrow because of the cold weather and wind chill. I usually just push my plans ahead one day in the subjects that we miss. Sometimes, I'll teach a double period of the missed subjects to catch up. That gets tricky with students being out of the room for special education services, though!
