Alphabet Intervention!

Happy Wednesday!

Last week, I shared some of our favorite math ideas and this week I'm focusing on...

So here's the scoop:

As a first grade teacher, I really don't have that much experience teaching the alphabet. We usually kick off the year with a review of short vowels and blending CVC, then away we go towards more complex phonics sound-spellings.

But this year, I've already assembled a "breakfast club" to get to better acquainted with our letters.

Here's what we do while munching on our breakfast:

We will be tackling two letters per week with a "Day One/Day Two" schedule. We started this week and so far, so good! The chart above lists Letter Aa as an example, but I'm still aligning our scope and sequence with the presentation in our new-to-us CKLA curriculum.

I'm using observation to see how my students respond to the activities this week...what  they enjoy, what seems too easy, and where I can adjust. 

I've found some wonderful resources on TPT, but I still need more! I'm looking for a packet of at least four printables per letter...two handwriting, one identification, and one "application."

 I printed two on a page for a student-friendly size. I'm also using printables from my Letter of the Day packet.

I've also incorporated MANY hands-on learning activities!

I loved creating this packet for one little friend a few years ago...

I had NO idea I'd be using it now with a whole group of friends!

I'm thankful this year to have a big chunk of TIME to tackle literacy with my small groups this year. I have up to TWO HOURS per day with mostly the same first graders...broken into one hour in the morning for Guided Reading and one hour in the afternoon focused on Phonics. This is in addition to our breakfast meeting! I'm excited about having this opportunity and will be spending the weekend aligning up all my intervention plans to maximize this time!
